WHERE... VERY... DELICIOUS... CAKESHOP!

I bought a mobile telephone

My old phone stopped turning on around christmas so I got one of these.

I had no real idea how to choose one from the millions of brands and models available so I gave up and looked at just the selection in my local Tesco. This one was on offer for like twelve and a half quid. So I went and looked it up on the internet and it seemed basic and sufficiently lacking in pointless features (I only want the thing for emergencies)

I like how small and light it is. In comparison, the old one is like a brick.

Doom stuff

What little I've done recently included

two small E1-style techbase maps from ages ago

1300000000

I missed another "mini" epoch but it couldn't be helped as I was asleep. At least I was aware that it was going to happen this time.

a heartwarming tale of helping a stranger in need

Okay get this, so my mother had the day off work and as it was a nice sunny day I said, let's go for a walk, and so we went to and all the way around the edge of the memorial park.

On the far side there was a fence and as we were walking along we caught sight of a couple of dogs and upon further examination a woman right up against the fence between the edge of the park and the railway line on the other side. She was crouched down facing towards the fence.

Never one to keep her mouth shut my mother called over and asked if the woman was all right. It turned out that she was trying to reach a ball which had rolled through the fence, but she couldn't. One of the dogs was staring intently at it, it's his favourite, she says. My mother said maybe we have longer arms.

So anyway this ball right, it's way too far away to reach with the hands, the woman is saying she tried to reach it with a stick, I could do so as well but it wouldn't move far enough and then being on a slope would roll back as soon as the stick stopped touching it.

Then it suddenly occurred to me to use two sticks, one in each hand, instead of just reaching through one handedly. Using each stick alternately I was able to roll the ball a small distance, then switch sticks and roll it a bit more with the other one. Doing this I was able to draw the ball up the slope and eventually bring it into reaching distance.

I threw the ball and the dog caught it in his mouth. I patted him on the head and said "there you go mate". The woman thanked us both and we all went on our way.

Well I hope that suitably warmed your heart. I was just pleased to have found a retrieval strategy that worked...

two threads about PrBoom death in a week, what is going on

Unlike last time I actually posted the reply! Link

I don't think PrBoom (trunk) is dead, but I'm the idiot who keeps making commits to it so I may be biased :-P

I think there's enough new stuff in trunk to warrant at least a point release, but then there's still a lot of missing features that plus has and trunk does not. Furthermore I can't do much besides commit code. I don't have sourceforge access to do releases or the knowledge of how to do them, and even if I had I can't do the Windows or Mac builds (honestly, nor would I want to)

So I just occasionally commit stuff that "scratches my own itches" and/or fixes obvious bugs that are easy to fix, in a futile gesture against the inevitable.

And yeah sometimes I wonder what the point is. I love entryway and what he does but I don't see the point in just copying it blindly. If we did that we might as well delete trunk entirely and put a note on the website "go and use plus instead, last one to leave turn off the lights". On the other hand Proff did once say trunk and plus should be much closer together than they are, and it is his project (especially so now cph has gone) so I don't know what to do.

check out my cool debian bug reports

Patches too. I'm quite pleased with a couple of them, especially 616319 which took a bit of figuring out.

Still haven't figured out this wretched awesome/SDL resolution change clash thing but at least now I think I know which area of the code it's in!

Oh and I still haven't figured out how to get mplayer to play 6-channel sound either (I think that's more something to do with alsa though) which means I still haven't seen the Haruhi movie argh

I'm totally chickening out of actually posting this reply to this

In PrBoom - maybe, that port has been dead for years.

You are referring to the unfortunate fact that there has not been a release since 2008. I am the only recently active committer to PrBoom (trunk). I would like to think there's been enough done since 2.5.0 to warrant at least a point release, but I can't do releases by myself. So I just push patches to SVN occasionally, to scratch my own itches, or fix "easy" bugs reported by others. Sometimes I cherry-pick patches directly from plus but I don't see the point in just blindly copying everything entryway does. In that case we might as well delete trunk and replace it with a copy of plus.

What do you think we should do? Do you think we should just kill it and put a note on the website that says "this project is superseded by PrBoom-Plus, use that instead"? I think that would be a shame...

Sigh, some people would actually get motivated by this kind of thing, but not me, I just get sad.
